Combi-boilers are not being phased out in Suffolk County, but legislative changes mean that certain systems might not be allowed or even possible in the near future.
New York State is trying to enforce a ban that prevents new homes from having gas connections or fuel oil facilities. The ban is designed to push electrification. It was planned to come into effect in January 2026, but was recently put on hold due to an appeal from the New York State Builders Association.
The ban would apply to a range of general appliances and HVAC systems, including stoves and ovens, furnaces and boilers, water heaters, and other fuel-powered systems.
This won’t affect boiler installations or furnace installations in homes that already use gas (additions, renovations, and replacements are exempt). If you are considering a fuel-based combi-boiler to replace your old boiler, you can still get one.
Gas Combi-Boilers are Still Ideal for Many Households
While the push for electrification has a lot of value, the reality for many families on Long Island is quite different. If you live in Suffolk County, you will know that the winter months are dangerously cold and the electric grid is less than reliable. Gas combi-boilers are a dependable way to ensure that your home has heat and domestic hot water even in the worst winter conditions.
Is it Still Worth Getting a Combi-Boiler?
Yes, it’s still worth getting a combi-boiler, especially if you are replacing an older model.
Consider the benefits of a combi-boiler over separate systems for heating and domestic hot water:
- A combi-boiler saves space by combining heating and hot water in a single unit. They are tankless and ideal for cramped basements and tight utility closets.
- Modern combi-boilers are more efficient, often exceeding efficiency ratings above 90%.
- Hot water is instant and continuous.
- A new combi-boiler installation is more affordable than if you had to replace a separate domestic water heater and radiant heating system.
- Combi-boilers heat water directly from the main supply, so there’s less risk of contaminants.
Combi boilers are available in gas and electrical variants, so there are options depending on what you already use at home.
