Areas of the South Shore, East End, and North Shore are high-risk zones for salt air corrosion. Your proximity to the coast could directly affect the durability of your HVAC system. Homes within a mile of the water have an average estimated HVAC lifespan of 10-12 years, while homes at least five miles inland have average HVAC lifespans of 15-20+ years.
Lennox®, one of America’s leading HVAC manufacturers, uses unique technologies to minimize the risk of corrosion and ensure that you get the maximum lifespan from your HVAC equipment. You can forget about shorter lifespans and enjoy a lasting investment in heating and cooling.
Aluminum Tubing and Fins for Outdoor Coils
Lennox® systems use aluminum tubing and fin structures to resist corrosion, even from direct salt spray.
- Copper is no longer the best choice for corrosion resistance. Copper develops a patina (oxidation) that protects it from damage. The copper might change color, but it will still do its work to transfer heat between refrigerant gases and the outside air. Many outdoor systems from other brands use copper tubing, but it’s no longer the gold standard for HVAC equipment.
- Aluminum fins are lightweight and also inherently resistant to salt-heavy air. Lennox has moved its product lines to use aluminum Quantum™ coils. This eliminates the risk of galvanic corrosion that develops where copper and aluminum meet (common in systems that combine materials). Like copper, aluminum develops a protective patina and doesn’t rust.
Quantum™ Coil Technology
Lennox® Quantum™ coils, available on some systems, use all-aluminum alloys for improved durability in Suffolk County’s humid and salty air.
Some air conditioning brands use off-the-shelf alloys and coat their coils with a resistive material to improve durability. The problem with this approach is that coatings eventually wear out, and the aluminum underneath then suffers from degradation. Because Lennox® coils are uncoated and use proprietary alloys, they don’t go through the sudden failures that other brands do. This is why Lennox® has one of the strongest warranties in the industry.
- Signature® Collection coils are covered for 12 years when registered.
- Elite® and Merit® series coils are covered for 10 years when registered.
Coils can last much longer than the warranty period, but knowing that you have a safety net for the first 10 – 12 years of ownership is important.
