Ductless Systems - Heating & Air Conditioning

Ductless, Mini-Split Heat Pumps

Ductless, mini-split-system heat pumps (mini splits) make good retrofit add-ons to houses with "non-ducted" heating systems, such as hydronic (hot water heat), radiant panels, and space heaters (wood, kerosene, propane).

They can also be a good choice for room additions or basements, where extending or installing distribution ductwork is not feasible.

Like standard air-source air conditioners or heat pumps, mini splits have two main components: an outdoor compressor/condenser, and an indoor air-handling unit. A conduit, which houses the power cable, refrigerant tubing, suction tubing, and a condensate drain, links the indoor and outdoor units.

The main advantage of a mini split unit is its size and flexibility. This unit is useful for heating and cooling individual rooms, also known as “zoning.” Depending on how much temperature control is required, models can have as many as four indoor air-handling units (for four separate zones) connected to one outdoor unit. Each zone has its own thermostat so you only need to condition the area when someone is in it, saving both energy and money.

The hook-up between the indoor and outdoor units generally requires only a two-inch hole to the outside for the conduit. Most manufacturers provide a variety of connecting conduit lengths so you can locate the outdoor unit as far away as 50 feet from the indoor evaporator. This makes it possible to cool front facing rooms with the compressor placed in a more inconspicuous location on the side or rear of the home.

Since mini splits have no ducts, they avoid energy loss (30% or more!) associated with the ductwork of central forced air systems.

Mini splits offer more flexibility in interior design options when compared to other add-on systems. The indoor air handlers can be suspended from ceilings, mounted flush into drop ceilings, or hung on walls. Floor-standing models are also available. Most indoor units have profiles that are about seven inches deep and usually come with sleek, high tech-looking jackets. A remote control makes it easy to turn the system on and off when it's positioned high on a wall or suspended from a ceiling.

Split-systems can also help to keep your home safer since there is only a small hole in the wall as opposed to through the wall or window mounted air-conditioners, which provide an easy entrance for intruders.

Soundview will work with you to correctly size each indoor unit and  to find the best location for its installation.
